Fuck choice. Choose MMC (again)

I'm reposting this because I came across a link to it from this blog which merged it with the MMC monopoly board which was published earlier by Dr Rant. I wish I'd thought of that.

Choose MMC. Choose MTAS. Choose a region. Choose a career. Choose a fucking big lottery. Choose portfolios, on-line application forms and years of uncertainty. Choose a cut in training posts, career choice and job security. Choose FTSTA’s no one knows anything about, middle grade rotas being run by juniors who’ve never worked in the specialty before, foundation programmes you have no control over, and hospitals you don’t want to work in. Choose being treated by ‘trained doctors’ rather than ‘doctors in-training’, even though the average consultants training hours have been cut from 40,000 to 10,000. Choose Hospital At Night and no-one knowing the patients anymore. Choose being an SHO lost in the middle of it all, with nothing but a sparsely updated web-site to inform yourself. Choose seniors who know nothing about the system and seem powerless to influence it. Choose an internal office with no windows in your brand new PFI hospital while the doors fall off and middle managers sit in their swanky boardrooms munching on biscuits that your taxes are paying for. Choose paying £10 a day for the privilege of parking at your work-place while you work non-compliant rotas and get bullied into lying on your EWTD monitoring forms. Choose sitting at that PC filling-in mind-numbing, spirit-crushing objective assessment questionnaires. Choose PMETB-approved curricula and competency-based assessments no-one has properly validated. Choose your third choice career path and wondering who the fuck you are on a busy post-take ward-round. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable Non-Consultant Career Grade post, nothing more than an embarrassment to the under-experienced, ‘fit for purpose’ FY’s you’ve trained to replace yourself.

Choose not to choose your future.

Choose MMC.

Dr Rant loves this - sounds great when done in a strong Ewan McGregor accent. It was first posted on DNUK, and Dr Rant would like to thank the original author for permission to republish it here (and the original artist for the image too).

The author must surely have been referring to the infamous RIE.

Below is the 1st thing that I have actually been sent from the MTAS. It means that possibly I will have 2 days notice to arrange to go to an interview. From Australia.

Dear Applicant

Re: Shortlisting and interviews for specialty training applicants

Due to the extension of the deadline for submitting applications, the
shortlisting timetable has been amended. In order to ensure that the scoring
of all applications is thorough, considered and complete, shortlisting
results will be available on MTAS from Monday 26 February at 9:00am, rather
than Saturday as anticipated. You will be able to begin booking interviews
online from that time.

We understand that this delay is frustrating, and hope that this will not
have caused too much inconvenience. However, it is important that all
applications be thoroughly considered and this extension allows us to ensure
that this is the case.

IMPORTANT: If you are invited to attend an interview which takes place next
week (28 February - 2 March), please book your interview time on MTAS by
17.00 (GMT) on Tuesday, 27 February.

If you are invited to attend an interview which takes place after 2 March,
you have until Friday, 2 March at 12.00 noon (GMT) to book your interview
place online.

You can check the interview schedule for the specialties you have applied
for on the MMC website. If you have applied for one of the specialties that
is interviewing next week, please make sure you log into MTAS on Monday or
Tuesday by 5pm to book a place. You will also need to notify your employer
of any interviews you may be invited to, if you have not done so already.

Yours sincerely

The MTAS Team

Happy fucking days - no interviews via MTAS. No feedback, nothing. I meet every little fucking tick and more on the person specification list. Not sure why no interview. I doubt I am alone. I am certain the career I had planned on since I started my MRCP is down the gurgler. Now I am left with a CV, skill set and mind set aimed solely at gastro with a very obvious interest in general medicine as a side and no fucking where to go.

What an absolute waste of life and time. Sod the happy patients I spent ages sorting and the glowing references. Fuck em all, what a waste of time.

I am so angry.

I sent off a quick email in response to my career death to the MMC email address provided. Asking for a bit of feedback as to why no job interview. I did point out that 3 months prior I was considered suitable for the last speciality of my choice NTN interview in this email and wanted to know what had changed.
It would not have mattered what the fuck I wrote I would have got the same answer. I have pasted it in below. I wish I had just sent them some abuse.

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for submitting your application to specialty training 2007 via the Medical Training Application Service (MTAS).

From 9.00 on Monday 26th February UoAs are publishing on MTAS the results of shortlisting, which has been undertaken by trained shortlisting panels. You can log in to your MTAS account at www.mtas.nhs.uk to view your shortlisting outcome. If any of the UoAs to which you have applied have not completed shortlisting at the time you visit the site, you will see further information about when an update will be available. If you are on the final shortlist for any of the specialties/UoAs you applied to, you will be invited to an interview for that specialty/UoA. You may be invited to more than one interview.

IMPORTANT: You must book your interview place online for each interview you would like to attend. If you are invited to an interview taking place this week (28 February – 2 March), you must book online by 17.00 (GMT) on Tuesday, 27 February if you wish to attend.

If you are invited to an interview which takes place after 2 March, you must to book your interview place online by 12.00 noon (GMT) Friday, 2 March.

If you do not book your interview place by the allotted time, it will be assumed that you do not wish to attend the interview.

If you have also applied to general practice, you will be notified of the outcome of the initial GP assessment separately within the next two weeks. Please remember that GP interviews will take place between 19 March and 6 April – please refer to the calendar on www.gprecruitment.org.uk for a list of the individual deanery GP Selection Centre dates. You may wish to consider this when selecting your other interview slots.

If you have any difficulties with booking your interview, please contact the relevant Unit of Application directly.
