I don't think God would approve

The most common cause of Institutional Corruption is a conflict of interest. The UK government, it appears, has been paying bribes for years to obtain lucrative arms deals (according to the BBC and the Guardian). The Serious Fraud Office was about to expose the government's illegal complicity in this (breaking their own anti-corruption laws). The government needs Saudi Arabia's help in the Arab world because, well, let's face it, they don't have many friends there just now. So the government decided to halt an anti-corruption investigation, which was about to show the government of the UK was acting corruptly, in order to 'protect the national interest'.

Several conflicts of interest there, so no surprise that this is a good example of institutional corruption. It's the same 'we are the government, so protecting us is protecting the national interest' bullshit that got Nixon impeached [almost - Ed], and it's the same shit that has the NHS being torn apart by 'corrupt' mangers gaming targets to give 'corrupt' politicians nice numbers to read out to parliament, the press, and anyone else who still listens to politicians (of which there are less and less, largely because the corruption is becoming so evident).

The irony is that the reason Tony Blair give for killing an anti-corruption investigation into his own government's illegal activities was to keep happy an ally that he and Bush need badly because they invaded a country that was no direct threat after God told them to do it ('I did what I thought was right' was Blair's way of saying what Bush characteristically said more directly as 'God told me to invade Iraq, and I invaded Iraq').

Now call me old fashioned, but I don't think that's how Christianity works. I don't think God tells people to 'Do The Right Thing' when it involves parachuting the troops in to kill and get killed in their thousands, but God then conveniently says 'Do The Wrong Thing and Lie Like Fuck' when the rozzers are about to expose corruption in your government.

I'm not even sure that God tells people to raze countries to the ground. If I recall correctly, that's a bit Old Testament, which is more up the Israelis street (but that's a whole different rant). I think you'll find that the whole point of Christ dying on the cross was to end all of that Killing People in the Name of God shit, and I think it's reasonably safe to assume that a God who sent his own Son to die so we'd get the 'turn the other cheek' message loud and clear, is going to be pretty pissed at the fact that Bush and Blair are trying to bring Holy Wars back into fashion (remember the Operation Crusade codename that they tried to use for the invasion of Afghanistan - I mean, come on! [It was Operation Infinite Justice, but Bush did refer to it as a Crusade early on - Ed]).

No, I think this is just another case of screaming narcisists mistaking their own internal voices for The Voice of God. You can always tell screaming narcisists who mistake their own internal voices for The Voice of God, because God always seems agree with them. Since God doesn't always seem to agree with even himself, this is a dead giveaway.

Top tip, Tone. You can't occupy the moral high ground if you're a lying cheating bastard who will do anything to achieve your ends.

Two niggling points:

Nixon wasn't impeached. He resigned to avoid being impeached, since he couldn't face conviction.

As for the snide remark about Israel: how many ISRAELI suicide bombers have there been since the UN voted to establish the state in 1948? Who openly calls for the destruction of its neighbor--Israel or the Palestinian Authority? Get your priorities as well as your facts right, bubba.

And, ah yes, who said "I come not to bring peace but a sword"?

I agree with the comment about Israeli Old Testament approach to conflict resolution - how typical of a madwife to react so reflexly.Until you read where she lives!

Who's ignored the most UN resolutions?

Who started terrorism in that particular part of the world by blowing up a hotel that shall remain nameless?

Anyway, if we're going to split hairs: Nixon was impeached formally, but resigned before the vote in the full house therefore the process wasn't completed. However, articles of impeachment were published.

I've added 'almost' to the bit about Nixon's behaviour and threatened impeachment.

I didn't think my comment was 'snide', antigonos. Are you saying that the Old Testament is not the same as the Torah (in it's broadest sense), or that the Israeli approach to foreign policy is not shaped by their history and religeon?

My guess is that regimes will continue to take increasingly desperate measures, including war based on a phony prospectus, to secure the largest possible stake in the planets dwindling natural resources.

It took from the beginning of time until just over 50 yrs ago to put the first 2billion humans on the planet - we now have 6billion, and projections suggest a figure of nearer 8billion by 2050.

This has got nothing to do with God, it is to do with oil.

The Saudi dictatorship has the largest reserve and Iraq the second largest.
Steps will be taken to relieve Iran of its oil as soon as a window of opportunity arises.
And in time maybe the Saudis will be relieved of theirs, perhaps under the guise of feigned Western concern about human rights abuses, or the spectre of al qaeda's activities will be used again.

In the meantime the British, and indeed US tongue will continue to probe the darkest recesses of the Saudia Arabian backside, especially when lucrative arms deals are involved.

God, national security, or any other flimsey smokescreen will be used to deter interested parties from taking an impartial look at these dark and sinister dealings.

One of your rants is missing doctor, you're giving up on juniors?!

I regret I have to inform you that I am not a "madwife" but a State Certified Midwife, what the Americans call a Certified Nurse Midwife, having studied midwifery in Cambridge (UK, not Massachusetts)about 30 years ago (when everyone was complaining about how the NHS was being destroyed, btw).

IMHO, Britain has never gotten over losing its occupation of the Middle East, known as the "Mandate". But then, I'm not sure it has really taken on board the fact that the Empire is no more.

Stick with medicine, Dr(s) Rant. Of course, someone in the Foreign Office might be encouraged to arrange a fact-finding tour for Patricia Hewitt in Gaza and that might solve a lot of the NHS's problems...

it is an old saying but still apt, "Mr Guido Fawkes was the olny man to enter parliament with honest intentions."

Dr Rant,

You know I'm a fan, but in the name of fuck, stick to the NHS and leave wider world politics to those who have a fucking clue what they are talking about.

DK,

I wasn't aware that knowing what the fuck you are talking about was a requirement for a career in politics.

Which bit of Dr Rant not knowing what they fuck we are talking about did you specifically have in mind, or were you referring to the whole fucking post, or was it just the principal of the whole thing?

Dr Blue said...

Principle of the thing, Francis. You are the Principal.

Whenever someone claims "God's on my side" they are right. But God's equally on the side of the person you are talking to or about.

And he reserves vengeance to himself.
