Spoon, Jar, Jar, Spoon

Ray Rankmore: "Just like that."

Isn't democracy marvelous? Over in Bedford, a certain Hospital Dermatologist, turned independent parliamentary candidate and hospital closure protester, has been on the receiving end of some management scrutiny.

A few weeks ago (5th September to be precise), I was summoned by the chairman of Bedford Hospital NHS Trust, Ray Rankmore, to his office. Mr Rankmore has a reputation for speaking frankly so I was interested to hear what he had to say. “In business” he told me “ if management think there is someone who isn’t 100% behind them, they get rid of them; they call them in and they get rid of them, just like that”. He repeated the “just like that” for added emphasis. “In the NHS, we can’t do things quite like that, so we have to do things somewhat differently.”

Yeah Ray! The other difference between the NHS and the private sector is that in the private sector, when the management fuck things up like you have, they get sacked long before they can take it out on the staff. It's called accountability. Didn't your hospital once have 3 stars? What kind of state is it in now?

If you live by the sword of government targets, without questioning their worth or even morality, then you deserve to die by them as well. If Bedford hospital's demise is 'the government's fault' and not yours, then you are the one that should be 100% behind Barry Monk!

What is it with NHS management? We now have proof positive that they're too fuckwitted to even do bullying properly...........

actually in the real commercial world outside the cotton wool world of the nhs, crap managers loose good staff who move to the competition, one of the many problems with the nhs is that there is no competition and not enough places for good staff to move on to

it is this competitive dynamic which is missing in the nhs

shut the fucking nhs down its a complete waste of our national resources

Let's be honest- no one with any decent management skills goes into the NHS- its for the also-rans. I mean, if you have a masters degree in management from Havard, you get to work for KPMG, don't you- you don't go to Bedford!

If you have a masters degree in management from Harvard, you get to go to Morgan Stanley where you can really fuck things up.

A quick observation on hospital managers. I have noticed, in the last two hospitals I have worked in that the 'junior' manager (or whatever the actual title is; the one on the floor who does the actual day-to-day staff harassment, telling you to do extra on-calls, work late and the all important bulling about EWTD diaries) have been absolutely stunning. Properly drop dead gorgeous. This of course makes them much harder to argue with.

Has anybody else noticed this? Is this some new policy, or a coincidence?

I speak only from a male perspective, have any lady medics noticed attractive male sub-managers?
