Privatise the NHS

Let's privatise the NHS.

I'm sick of long queues and poor customer service.

Let's put Private Business in charge. Someone with a long track record. I know, British Airways!

Or how about BAA. Or perhaps Enron (whatever happened to them). Or Northern Rock. Or Bear Stearns. No, wait, one of the train operators.

Well, anyhow, one of those stand-out examples of 'private is good, public is bad'....

Yes, I thought of that too. Anybody for Ward Terminal 5?

Isn't this new 'giving patients the money' part of the privatisation?

Anonymous - giving the patients the money is another way of putting a limit on how much care someone can have. "Sorry, you've run out of money in your budget. You'll have to wait until the next financial year for more insulin" or "Sorry, you've run out of money in your budget so you can't have any more dressings changed and you'll have to wait for more pain relief in the next financial period."

Think it won't happen? I remember what it was like for a diabetic relative of mine when glucose testing strips were subject to an arbitrary limit. We have plenty of rationing already, and this is just another way of doing it.

But of course, it sounds great if you assume the budget will be big enough. I'm simply cynical enough to suppose it's another excuse to cut corners.

I suspect the examples don't really support your arguement, but rather undermine it. I can choose to avoid BA. I had no money in Enron, Northern Rock or Bear Sterns (because I have little money) but there are many alternatives. However in London I can't avoid BAA but then that's because it's er, a monopoly. This is not to support privatisation, just to try to get the logic right. It did rise a smile though.

What you say is what I too meant to say nutty, give patients the money and when it runs out, they will have to foot the bill or die! In which case, good riddens! Not the government's fault that you're poor, is it?

Said sarcastically ..

We could always do it Oregon-style and have a lottery for health-insurance. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7321500.stm

We could put all the politicians in it and tell them they can win a personal health budget. But hang on, the rest would claim medical care on their elastic expenses accounts...

They want to Privatise Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon from April 2009, in the frame is a private consortium made up of a few G.P johnnies and backed by Interhealth Canada, needless to say we are fighting it.
Funny how last years consultation regarding the saving of Hinchingbrooke included a caveat suggesting that the Trust Board "could be dissolved in 2009 and the running could be provided by another Trust or body"........especially as it will be in financial balance by 1st April 2009 and have been refurbished......mmmmm.....it stinks
