GP surgery extended hours:
86% of patients are satisfied with the current opening hours.
Problem: 14% of patients would like more convenience.
DoH take: This is a shocking reflection of the crap level of care in General Practice. GPs are lazy, worshy, bastards who need to be brought to heel by unilaterally changes to their contract with a fucking gun to their heads.
Quality of post-2004 Out of Hours GP cover:
84% of patients were satisfied with their care.
Problem: 16% of patients are fucked up by piss-poor medical care out of hours, resulting in pain, suffering, debility, and death.
DoH take: The service is working well.
Fuckers.

Very strongly put, to be sure, but you are absolutely spot on here.
The out-of-hours service was taken away from GPs because Government thought they could run it better and cheaper: it is more expensive and worse, so who do they try and blame? Yes, The GPs.

You forgot to mention that the "quality targets" got easier just at the time the PCTs took over the service
Er, I should probably point out that the eighty-odd percent figure you have was from a survery of patients at doctors surgeries so people who couldn't get there were probably under-represented. So continually quoting it is probably not a good idea.
However, there's no doubt in my mind that the pressure on GP opening hours comes mostly from the business lobby. Basically, the CBI types don't want the perceived expense of giving people time out for doctors appointments (as used to be commonplace a decade ago). Plus the fact tha due to idiotic goverment targets, it's very hard to book a predictable appointment.
On the day that sickness and doctors appointments cost the economy more than fuckwitted management, then the CBI can complain.
Pish - it's patient satisfaction surveys...
And face it - when it comes to patient satisfaction - patients are stupid, said one Rantette.
Patient satisfaction surveys have got fuck all to do with good quality care, said another.
And patients are only satisfied if they actually like their "insert service provider here" and the real issue doesn't matter.

you are in fantasy land if you think GP services in this country to the WORKING population is anywhere near good enough
the top down government targets, and lefty GPs who think their services to the local criminals and drug dealers are more important than the decent folk, do not lead to reasonable service for the working population
you really should chat to folk who have worked around the world, and ask them to compare and contrast GP access in the UK versus the rest of the developed world
in my view the UK is at the very bottom of the notional league table, composed after lots of real world interaction with medics around the world
you are self satisfied complacent arseholes, yes the government is fucking terrible, but dont kid yourself that GP or any other NHS services are anywhere near acceptable
the sooner the ordinary folk really can control their health spend in real terms day to day the better
and yep the nhs take lies to a new level, far beyond the politicians, you probably dont realise how bad it is as a medic, try looking at a few complaints through the patients eyes and see the crap the nhs comes up with
