The Alcohol Epidemic rages on

The number of admissions for alcohol related illness continues to sky rocket.

The average age of cirrhosis patients continues in free fall.

The cost to the alcoholics, their families, society as a whole, and the NHS continues to grow.

The profits of the alcohol makers continues to grow.

The Devils' plan is to leave the individual to their own devices. Well, if you count being under-educated by a system that would rather you stayed stupid so you can do the medial tasks the Poles won't touch while being bombarded by constant images linking alcohol use to being sexy, interesting, successful, rich, and being guaranteed a life-time supply of tits and ass (or, increasingly, pecs and ass) as being left to a libertarian free-choice.

Yeah. That should work.

Meanwhile, I think I'll drink myself into oblivion. How else is one meant to cope with living in this shit country?

Doc,

DK's idea of "allowing" individuals to make a "free choice" is not as empty or nearly as 1 dimensional as you make out: "free choice" is indeed something ventured but on to all things - therefore no welfare state for people to live off of, healthcare provision isn't free to abuse (or at the very least no longer free at the point of entry, which is something that has been discussed on the LPUK forums).

The first step to dealing with this problem is to address the root; high taxation on everything, making it more profitable to sit on your rearend, watching Trisha and eating KFC and drinking luminous, alcohol-containing muck and then persecuting those who do practice a little self-restraint are the ills that have caused this and all of these things can be placed on far too much government intervention into our personal lives.

Rant, you are clearly in need of another tincture so that you may think more clearly.
As W.C.Fields said there are people around who "give drinking a bad name".
If the government say anything they must be lying, and for a reason. They are hyping up the evils of drink so that they can raise taxes so that they can waste more money. Where booze is cheap the only drunks you see are British tourists. Beer is a refreshing drink, wine is part of a meal, G & T is an aperitif and a malt is a work of art. All of these are actually good for you. Oblivion and puking in the street are not, but addressing this is not as simple as raising taxes. Sadly there are puritans around who will support the Evil Government in yet another binge of displacement activity.

Yes, you are right, Rant: the government does keep people stupid. So, who's fault is that? The government's fault.

We eeeevil libertarians would take the government out of education entirely, so thanks for your vote of confidence.

Oh, and I don't favour "leaving people to their own devices", I favour letting themselves take responsibility for their own lives.

1) A free choice is not free unless it is informed.

2) We are not allowed to take responsibility for our own lives in this country because the government forces us to contribute to the NHS, etc. even though many of us would rather opt out. Thus, whatever I do, you can argue that I am a "burden on society and the NHS" even though I am, in reality, neither.
