We will, we will, MOCK you!
I thought it was about time that we visited the subject of the latest, and stupidest, most hare-brained scheme of the creator of Doctors Net UK: www.iwantgreatcare.org
You may have heard the russet tones of Neil Bacon all over the meeja over the past couple of days lauding his new love-child. Crippen's already touched on this subject here, here, here, here and here, but I wanted to draw your attention to the delightful screenshot at the top of the piece, which is well worth a click and reading in detail.
No doubt single issue loons and self obsessed tossers (like some of our correspondents) will love this opportunity to snipe at doctors that they perceive are getting between them and what they want from the NHS. However, they are unlikely to take the opportunity to credit the same doctors for giving them what they 'need' in preference to want they 'want'. Doctors will of course have no right to reply.
As you may have gathered, every non self flagellating/satisfied doctor without a vested interest is pretty pissed off about the whole thing, as is evidenced by this story.
Sorry Neil. It's a shit idea and you are behaving like a total twat about the whole thing. Carter Ruck's letter has been partially funded by the team, and we will not be passive in our defence.
In the meantime, let the ridicule of 'I want great care' continue. I must say, I particularly enjoyed the review of the psychiatrist who put his 'wanger' in the patients' ear. Neil has made his position clear - that internet criticism of doctors is a good thing and immune to legal comeback..........

Funnily enough, I only heard it via medical blogs, & would othwerise be labouring in total ignorance of it. It wasn't in the Guardian or the Independent :)
Hello Asquith!
I've added in a link to the Guardian's article on the whole debacle (see meeja).
Bacon was also on Five Live monday night.
Frank
I am not a doctor nor do I have a relationship to a doctor except (a professional one) with a GP. In this capacity I think I am entirely open minded about this new site - and I am apalled. What more can I say?
Who are these self obsessed tossers then?
I still don't think you get it? All this nhs, doctors, the way patients are handled, the unfairness of much of it, in inequity, the worst access often for those needing it most, the time wasted by the nhs of those working, etc
I genuinely don't think you docs get how crap it can be for the patients
I think dr bacon and his website and followers on needs to evolve, for instance I think lots of problems are to do with the way a particular practise is run, not any one individual doctors issue, rather the way a collective group of docs and their practise manager and staff run things
Lots of the practical problems for patients are caused by under trained low quality receptionists etc
And of course lots of issues from particular PCTs and hospital trusts
So for me it should be refined to allow feedback on a particular PCT, a particular practise, etc and not just individual docs
However good customer feedback is a good thing, things could undoubtedly be done to improve the quality of feedback, but feedback and access to the results more widely amongst the public is a good thing
As for your ongoing mantra that the patient is in no position to judge the best doctor etc I to some degree sympathise, however patients can tell when they are in dirty surroundings, they can tell when they are having their time wasted, they can tell when the receptionist is rude, they can tell when access is poor, they can tell when their father has been allowed to rot with prostrate cancer with no treatment other than pain killers, patients and their views are a powerful force for improvement if only they are allowed to vote with their feet in much more immediate ways etc
Met a lady yesterday who has just had a baby, she was wheeled into a maternity ward by the ambulance, was horrified to find dirt and shit all over the place, and she demanded that her husband went and got the family car and drive her 100 miles to another maternity ward that she knew from experience was more acceptable, now that dirty hospital she escaped from really should be loosing funding if the patients are that cheesed off they leave when that close to giving birth, thank goodness it worked out for her, but really is this the Britain we want to live in?

Who are these self obsessed tossers then?
and who are these single issue loons ? couldn't be any in the medical profession, could there?
Dr Shipman was a very popular doctor. Doesn't mean he was any good...
Ah, I don't read Society (I only read the main body and G2), so I missed that story...
In any case, I've heard all about Baconshit by now, and I think he's a self-aggrandising, bullyinng bastard who doesn't care what happens to health care so long as he gets his huge fees.
My hatred of people like him is instinctive.
Click here for the reason behind Neil Bacon's departure from DNUK.
all in a flutter over potential transparency are we? May not be the way to do it, you could be right about that. The real bee in your bonnet is that people are trying to measure you. The people who use your services. God forbid! Little like beach erosion, don't think you are going to stop measurement and transparency you don't control. Welcome to the real world..............

In the real world, we'd be able to some our patients what we think of them too.....
....right before we tell them to fuck off and find another GP!
Francis
Actually Frank I agree with you. If patients want to be able to choose it should be a two way street.
Although, I also think you have more control over the environment at the moment than we do.

Have given "I want great care" a cursory glance. It will get no more than that. The DGH I work in has no mention in my speciality. I could however put myself in. Either then I could lie and boast, unchecked about my own abilities, or for a laugh, rubbish myself and my colleagues. What fun and so useful for the public!
I gave a cursory glance to Iwantgreat.org.
360 degree feedback is a good thing. Perhaps all doctors should do this as part of their training.
I searched for my doctors in Yorkshire and found none!!! This included general practice, paediatrics, haemotology, immunology and a whole other load of names. None there. Does Yorkshire exist.
I also left balanced feedback for my GP in York. 48 hours later, still not there.
The ghastly paediatricians weren't there.
The paediatric cardiologist wasn't there.
I searched my family. My brother is not known as Roland! But he doesn't work for the NHS :)
I search for the infamous locum staff grade psychiatrist in Sutton Coldfield - not there. Shame.
This could be worse than the old MAMA Board.
Meant to say that some of them are crap..... at their jobs.
Dim - I mean who would mix up the difference between a child who had severe congenital heart disease, endocarditis, stroke and proper diagnosis and munchasens/factitious illness.
Nothing but an idiotic paediatrician......
with her own agenda who used to live in York and now lives in Leeds, I gather she hasn't changed either...
And she isn't on that list either. Shame though she's been all over the MAMA Board for years....
Dr Rant...
My consultants usually tell me...
Allegedly, I have a hit list.... and am described as 'difficult'. !
It might be that I know my stuff on the syndrome, been messed around for years, researched to death, and suffered from medical neglect.
I have some that care. It could also be that I come from a hugely medical family and treat me with a bit of respect these days.
