Thankfully the Government is likely to ignore his stupid advice, which is unlikely to deter hardened drinkers (especially those who are wealthy and can easily afford a price hike). All that would happen is an increase in the black market, as has already happened with tobacco. Those who want to obtain cheap booze would have no difficulty obtaining it from bootleggers. Price manipulation is not the answer.

Whatever the subject, his failure to accept his responsibilities for his part in the MMC/MTAS disaster will haunt him and leave him open to the criticisms you fairly raise.
Not withstanding the rights and wrongs of changing tax on alcohol, Donaldson's involvement is unwanted. He'll get a better hearing when he's faced up to his own responsiblities!

Last time I was in a southern European capital the wine on the bar cost less than the mineral water and the only drunks were Brits. The locals did'nt bother finishing their drinks it was all so cheap what would be the point? As W.C.Fields put it "some people give drinking a bad name".
