So, Gordon Brown reckons that GPs should receive 'Ebay' style feedback, in order to 'make use of the enormous democratising power of information'.
What a complete and utter load of wank (albeit up the the usual poor standards of El Gordo Clunk-Jaw and his ZaNu-Labour fuckwits).
The last time I looked on Ebay, feedback was a two-way process to leaving feedback. So that if I left negative feeback for someone ("My Viagra order arrived 2 days late"), then they would probably do the same ("buyer is impatient twat who suffers from flop-cock").
This method ensures that the feedback system does not become a meaningless jumble of vexatious moaning and cyber-complaining.
Which partly explains why this proposed 'feedback' will never work for rating GPs.
Either we will face a one-way torrent of cyber-vitriol from semi anonymous heartsinks.
Or we will have a meaningless '100% positive feedback' where both parties smile with gritted teeth, neither wanting to affect their perfect score.
Having said that, it may sometimes be fun...
Lardbucket039: Dr Rant wouldn't give me antibiotics for my sore froat.
Rantstud069: Mrs Lardbucket is a malingering, workshy waste-of-space, who manages to lower the quality of life of everyone at the practice when she drags her trivial, hypochondriacal existence into our theshold.
The irony of Gordon Brown's own failure to submit himself to 'feedback' i.e a general Election has been noted.
I think you get the message anyway.
In the meantime, everyone else will be trying to do the same work as before, but slightly quicker to make up for the time this shite will waste.

Omg you guys kill me. Love the two way feedback thing.
some of the feedback sites for hotels work rather well
customers can rate hotels
hotels have no ability to rate or identify the folk leaving feedback
although im sure very occassionally a hotel could suffer a concerted campaign of bad feedback in my experience of using them ive been very surprised and the ratings always average out and the average from many bits of feedback together with specific comments always turns out to be spookily accurate
found some great hotels that way
so actually guys i think youre wrong wrong wrong
although i have not looked at the bacon site and dont know how it compares
if you dont like this you need to come up with some other ways of giving patients power as thats the only way nhs organisations are going to be forced to change to meet the needs of their customers who pay the bills!
No One - There is a huge difference between hotels and G.P's!
Patients are not always going to like what a G.P has to say to them e.g 'you are morbidly obese, you need to loose some weight' or ' Sorry, I am not prepared to give you either a sick note, or antibiotics for the common cold'. I have frequently heard patients complain because basically their G.P didn't say what they wanted to hear and it is those same patients who will give negative feedback.
If the system is to work it needs to be a two-way street. Where then patient confidentiality?
midwife muse
well with a bit of thought into the usability of the site it would be easy to trap that kind of feedback and seperate it from other stuff like
is the site clean?
did the receptionist try to diagnose and triarge you?
if you were crying in agony did they agree to see you 1 at all 2 that day 3 some time in a few weeks?
etc
it all comes down to how the site is designed and the results captured and replayed
No One
GP practices already conduct 2 different surveys into patient experiences on the issues you describe.
From next year, this will be conducted by IPSOS Mori, and the practice will have no influence over which of the 5% of the patient list are asked to complete it (i.e. can't cheat).
This is the best way to solicit feedback, although whether they ask the right questions, or deal with the results in the right way is another matter.
I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

It's the good old 4- 11 rule.
Do something for something that they like and they'll tell 4 of their friends.
Do something they don't like they'll tell 11 of their friends!
In an on line/ real time method, people are far more likely to complain that to compliment.
Such is the nature of society.
Patient reviews are always difficult to judge.
Commonly in dentistry it's don't go to that dentist he took my tooth out.
Aye well maybe if you'd brushed your teeth he wouldn't have had to!
Hi
Came across your interesting blog lord knows where. Have read other NHS type blogs. Had no idea how many doctors etc are stressed up. And I thought it was only teachers. Its being so cheerful keeps us all going!
Quoting Grumpy Old Ken
"Its being so cheerful keeps us all going!"
That and the salary!!!
Now, you see this annoys me, I'm all for feedback and a bit of humility never hurt anyone.
BUT.
What look at the case of Dr lazy bastard who treats everyone like shite?
All that happens is that less and less patients go to see them so they have nice relaxed surgeries.No-one asks for them or gets them to do anything for them.
There is no point in being a "nice" Dr in the NHS, you get to work MUCH harder and when you do the caring thing - sometimes involving letting people know that they are not in fact "right" all of the time - you get complaints and negative feedback - and because you "care" it negatively affects you personally.
Here's the rub though - because your well known to your patients (most of whom are happy and have no reason to "feedback") as being the "nice guy" your workload remains high.
So now you're upset by feedback, with a high workload!
The guys who deserve this kind of crap dont give a shit about some stupid website they'll never visit and actively court being Dr unpopular!!!!
I'm getting a little sick of this bullshit. So much so, I'm seriously considering a career change/break.
(I'm a GP)
Its all just smoke and mirrors, it has no teeth and if it did have then a right to reply is an absolute axiom.
"Junkie - if you dont give me valium I'll go to that website and fuck you up Doc.." don't think it wont happen we had exactly this incident recently during patient survey.
It fucks up the good, caring hard working Dr's in the UK.
Or it turns us into panderers and yes men... err just like the bankers and finance companies were before the fall. That didn''t work out so good now did it?
Anyone who doesn't realize its in the govt interest to create conflict between GP's and patients needs to seriously take a step back.
I left feedback for one of my GP's on the Iwantgreat care website. None of the GP's at that Practice were on there. So, I added it.
Months later, it isn't there - it wasn't 100% so I was fair on the bloke. He's quite nice but has a temper (it's the red hair).
My Practice also did a self-styled feedback. I contributed and my GP said "I know what's been said about me!", I think that included the comments on the web!!
As for the woman in the Practice would like to say absolutely CRAP. Lots of little old lady's have infections. Just that I am only in my 40s so am not an old hag yet. And guess what I had an infection which needed treating. Ugh
They asked for the feedback so I gave it honestly.
