Labour: always the wrong sort of choice

Here’s a brilliant example of a government repudiating its own record. This piece in the Guardian could be summarised down to,

“Labour OFFICIAL: We fucked it up. We got it wrong.”

However the more choice version is that Liam Byrne now admits that the choices Labour has offered have been somewhat empty.

“Byrne makes clear that the new approach is a big change from that adopted over the past 10 years under which Labour said it was offering the consumers of public services a choice. He says that has often been "an empty choice".”

"We need to give people real choices by locking down rights and entitlements and giving people fast means of redress ... In recent years power was basically pointing in the wrong direction. It was pointing up to senior civil servants and ministers in Whitehall and not pointing out to people. That helped create in too many places a culture of heads down, get the job done, deliver on the targets and tick the boxes."

A government making a big change in its policies after 12 years in power says that what has gone before was wrong. Well, we’d certainly agree with him on that.

It’s nice to see Labour are at last beginning to understand how badly its policies have done. Shame they didn’t realise it for Baby P, Staffordshire hospital and all the other “isolated” disasters that have occurred because of this governments ability to blame the staff rather than run services. Central credit and local blame again.

We, and other bloggers in fields of health, teaching, police, army and so on, will continue to help them to see exactly where they are going wrong.

The country will administer euthanasia and the (utterly undeserved) last rights to this dishonest, decrepit and disreputable government as soon as it possibly can.

What a pointless blog. You could just get on with your job and express your opinion through normal democratic channels rather than wasting your time with this. Still, if it makes you feel as if you're doing something productive... Hope your career picks up soon, eh?

Hello 'fresh out of sixth-form/red brick polyversity New Labour reasearcher/wannabe MP'.

My career's fine - at least I have one.

The 'normal democratic channel' eh? Would that be the one with the Jonh Lewis list that you aspire to?

The NHS isn't working - shouldn't that be Dr Rant isn't working?

I have never come across such slovenly blog output in all my life - one post per week is really not enough.

What's the matter with you all - too busy seeing patients ;o)

Oh well, some things don't change! However, your pay will. "Oh, we will all quit" Good then we can staff the NHS with doctors and not dickheads!!!!!! Welcome to the target zone runt. I suspect your turn will come right after the dismantling of the BBC......

Somehow NIKU thinks that reducing pay will mean they NHS gets a higher qaulity of doctor????

Yeah i mean look at all the specilities that had worse career prospects before (Psych, O&G etc). I mean all those essentially private US doctors work for peanuts don't they.
I like listening to the EU doctors i work with over here...they like the NHS as back home many of them say how expensive the health care is and how most doctors take money to bump people up the queue.

NIKU dosn't see what comes with the Dr;s pay cut...a massive reduction in hours. Hope your not in pain waiting for a review at night..with the single surgical FY running the wards and your 40th on the list of jobs as everyone else was forced to go home not to go over the new "cheaper" EWTD.

ah NIKU does see what come with big bad pay dip. Since we have the highest paid GP's on the planet and we still get third world care - yes its a fact unlike runts rants. And what's the difference between these other "docs" taking money to jump the queue and you blood sucking parasites with your private practice waiting list shell game?!?!?!? Give me a break dickhead NHS = FUBA

Don't fret, NIKU, the day of reckoning for the public services is fast approaching. Pay cuts, abolition of the final salatu index-linked pension schemes. All on the drawing board awaiting implementation.

Inded and we the move by the best, most experienced medics to the private sector to overcome that. We already have SHO/Reg grades that can't do what they would have been able to a decade ago.
Look forward to the future of seeing a "consultant" who will have to then go off for advice about what to do. ALl that will happen is you will have 3 visits to differet people for the same opnion you would have had from one in the past.

At least here the private patients are separate from the NHS crowd and as such don't afect the waiting lists too much.
You can't see standards dropping, you just see docs earning less and getting screwed and jump for joy...the patients are the ones who loose. As for GP and 3rd world care...i think that you're one of the few who thinks that and the evidence shows you are wrong.

niku--you are not aware that numerous clinicians and doctors DID blow the whistle on staffordshire disgrace but were ignored by the management structure who followed this contemptible government's inhumane agenda that management incentives come before CARE.you suffer from a bizarre delusion and attacking doctors is ludicrous.

dearie me, I come back after almost a year and dicover that Niku is STILL mouthing off at Dr Rant... How long has this been going on for, niku? Did you really have nothing better to do these last few months than continue to spout vitriol online? Think of all the things you could have done in all those hours wated. Whether you agree with Rant or not (and it's quite obvious that you don't) have you not worked it out by now that you're not going to be able to persuade him to your way of thinking? Please, niku, stop wasting your life by having the same argument again and again.

OK - First up, The NHS is failing due to poor funding and the lack of Goverment interest.

The people who use the NHS are gald that it is still there and it is STILL saving lives despite the failings.

Half of you blogging here probably would be here if it weren't for the care the NHS provides.

The real problem is that the NHS has got the same amount of money from year to year (untill recently) but the work load just keep increasing.

Low and behold! The EU has got involed with the UK, and now the NHS has become a dumping ground for all people who want free health care.

Most of the EU countries bar the UK charge for healthcare. For instance - Poland.

The amount of Polish people who come through the meterinty clinic at the moment is crazy. Half of them get seen once for booking then disappear for 2-6 months only to come back to give birth, then vanish back to Poland. It's not just the Polish people, but they seem to be the largest amount thus far.

Hence the system is being abused, and just like anything being abused - something has to give sooner or later...
