Doctors are more engaged in managment in The Netherlands. Whatever I read about the electronic patient notes comes from consultants who are involved in the development and implementation of the systems. I just read the BMJ and that more medics will have managment tasks in the NHS, maybe things will improve if they get a change.

I regularly travel to Europe and am amazed that our neighbours seem to have far better health services than our own. Surely we can emulate them and devise a better system than the antiquated NHS? Or are there too many vested interests in maintainiing the status quo? Our doctors and politicians (who invest in healthcare companies) are doing very well financially out of the NHS, it keeps loads of civil servants employed, so I suppose there must be something good about the NHS. Pity that the patients don't seem to benefit though.

Surely Anon from the Netherlands should realise that in the UK we couldn't possibly use best-practise from elsewhere to help implement systems or anything else on a grand scale - i mean - what would the IT consultants do for a job?
You see it time after time after time with government contracts from NIRS to the NHS. Contracts written up by fuckwits for fuckwits.
How i laughed when a senior ministry official told me how they held a budget of a fe £bn but had never had any training in financial reporting or the like. Ho ho.

I'm still wondering if the IT-people of the NHS have ever spoken with IT-people from the continent. In the Netherlands, the electronic notes are further developed than here, I can tell you out of experience. I just read that it should be up-and-running by 2009. We will see, but it might make sense to have a look.

I always laugh at any talk of a National Program - in any hospital I have worked in computer systems are slow and invariably don't work. They struggle to cope with a blood results recall system, and the facility to print is almost impossible if you're not important enough to have an office (ie be a manager).

And we want computers to cope with more? Not a chance.

Thus, our Patient Electronic Notes Information System won't share with their Computerised User Note Tool.
